The term “endodontics” comes from the Greek word “endo,” meaning “inside,” and “odonto,” meaning “tooth.” Endodontics is therefore the branch of dentistry that deals with the inside of the tooth. Its purpose is the prevention and treatment of all diseases affecting the dental pulp (the inside of the tooth) and the periapical tissues (the tissues surrounding the tooth’s root).
